The Project
Shire have completed many projects with Acorns Children’s Hospice over the years. Work has been carried out at all three of their facilities including a new build project in Worcester, extensions and refurbishment of their Selly Oak building and the following work at Acorns Children’s Hospice in Walsall completed in 2008.
The £350,000 project completed in two phases consisted of a new Day Room and a new Entrance / Reception extension.
Although relatively small the Day Room was structurally complex with an arrangement of exposed timber glulam roof beams cantilevering out from the external walls forming a canopy. The building was designed to be a focal point for the Hospice.
The ground conditions on the site were poor resulting in reinforced concrete foundations supported by piles.
The new Entrance / Reception extension to the existing hospice was designed with a significant amount of glazing so was steel framed with a timber roof and piled foundations.
